As much as it maybe attributed it to the truth, it is too simple a trigger for such a complex character. But the concept of home and family isn’t something solely based on blood, Lion shows us. It’s about care and memory and intentionality and, most of all, love. And love is something that the Brierelys shower upon Saroo—even though he doesn’t fully comprehend their motive for doing so.
After several close calls, he is eventually found and sent to an orphanage. Unable to find his family from his descriptions, he is adopted and sent to live his new life in Australia. Years later has an adult he attempts again to find the family he lost.

He wonders if Guddu, not the troubled Mantosh, is his real brother. These are questions that nearly tear Saroo apart. He loves his Australian parents, and he’s deeply grateful for everything they’ve given him.
Saroo reveals that he is not from Calcutta and that he has been lost for more than twenty years, and his friends suggest he use Google Earth to search for his hometown in India. Saroo commences his search, but over time disconnects from Lucy and his family, overwhelmed by the thought of emotions his family must have gone through when he was missing. In rural India in the mid-1980s, the two brothers separated after Saroo, the younger boy, was instructed by 14 year old Guddu to wait for him inside the train station.

The memoir follows Saroo's life of poverty at home, to living on the streets of Kolkata, through to his getting adopted, and then on to his search for his family as an adult. Overall it is an uplifting story that pays tribute to Saroo's luck as much as his competency; it also give a huge nod to the power of acts of kindness. The book was co-written by Larry Buttrose, which may explain that even though the narration is very personalised, it feels distant. 8 out of 12, for the story itself, maybe a lot less for the writing. Saroo had become lost on a train in India at the age of five. Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata, before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia.

Saroo was only five years old when he followed his older brother to work along the train stations not far from his home. As Saroo fell asleep on a platform bench, Guddu his brother told him, “Just sit down, and don’t move. I’ll come back in a little while.” Waking up hours later to a dark, deserted platform, Saroo’s not certain why he stepped onto the empty train car standing before him. This is a story that truly speaks to the resilience and good of humankind. The people who helped him along the way are remarkable. From the his days as a lost boy in the dangerous streets of India to his established life in Australia, Brierley's journey has been an unimaginable experience.
First, I have to say that although I already knew the bones of the story, as so many potential readers may, it only made the reading that much more enjoyable. Ghost-writer Larry Buttrose isn’t listed on the cover although he’s credited “with Larry Buttrose” inside. An inspirational, true story, a life most of us can’t imagine – all this is the story of Saroo Brierley. A five-year-old Indian boy is adopted by an Australian couple after getting lost hundreds of kilometers from home. 25 years later, he sets out to find his lost family. Slumdog Millionaire was criticised for looking at India through an orientalist gaze.

Saroo continues to wander around the city before coming across Noor, a seemingly friendly woman who takes him back to her apartment. She tells Saroo that a man named Rama will help him find his way home. Saroo runs away, sensing that Noor and Rama have sinister intentions, and escapes Noor when she chases after him. After two months of living near the Howrah Bridge, Saroo is taken to the police by a young man. Unable to trace his family, they put him in an orphanage.
Fast forward to Saroo as a 30 year old man, he is determined to retrace his steps from that night he became lost to go back, find his hometown and be reunited with his brothers, sister and mother. Watched the movie today, and of course I cried at the end. Human memory is a slippery thing as any trial lawyer would attest. Psychologists have found that we can invent "memories" because our imaginations are so powerful.
In an orphanage later, a mentally ill boy, who’s terrified, gets dragged away by guards in the middle of the night. It’s unclear, but the boy seems to know and fear what’s coming, and I wonder whether perhaps his troubles stem from what happens during these midnight abductions. When he wakes up, the little boy feels the train move and rock beneath him. He looks out the window, sees the green and brown of India zipping past.
Still, Saroo can not forget his family in India and begins to search for them. Saroo Brierley was effortlessly interacting with journalists and signing copies of his autobiography when I met him at a plush five star hotel in suburban Mumbai for an interview. He looked like an NRI, spoke like an Australian. By any stretch of imagination you wouldn’t picture him to be the child of a daily wage labourer hailing from Madhya Pradesh. Let alone guess that he successfully traced the way back to his hometown from his adopted home in Australia after being separated with his family in 1987.Lion is based on this extraordinary true story. The film stars Dev Patel, Sunny Pawar, Rooney Mara, David Wenham, and Nicole Kidman, as well as Abhishek Bharate, Divian Ladwa, Priyanka Bose, Deepti Naval, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.
All he had to go by was that there was a train station whose name was something like 'Berampur' , that it had a water tower, an overpass across the tracks and that the town had a fountain near a cinema. His village 'Ginestlay' was somewhere nearby and that they were all reachable overnight by train from Calcutta. He notes that a nearby town is called Khandwa and that there is a Facebook group belonging to people from Khandwa. He contacts them and gets the key info that there is a nearby village called Ganesh Talai - the 'Ginestlay' of 5-year-old Saroo! Saroo soon goes to India and reconnects with his birth family to the great delight of his elderly mother Kamala and his siblings Shekila and Kallu, who are now married with children.
Before long, Guddu’s carrying little Saroo in his arms, the little boy too tired to stay awake. When the two boys arrive at their town’s small train depot, Guddu gently places the boy on a bench, realizing that it was a mistake to bring him along. It won two BAFTA Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film was also commercially successful, making $140 million worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Australian films of all time. I find it flipping amazing that 5-year old Saroo somehow managed to avoid any number of horrible situations while homeless and alone in Kolkata. To be adopted by a family in Australia truly was fortuitous.
What an amazing gift, and what an amazing gift he gives them in return. Looking up to his older brother, five year-old Saroo decides to go with Guddu one night. With only a vague idea of the name of the village he is from, and many miles in between, it’s amazing he ever found his way back.
